WHERE TO OBTAIN ANTI-RETROVIRALS "In terms
of a South African government cabinet declaration issued on April 17, 2002
all rape survivors are entitled to "immediate" access to antiretrovirals
as post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) after rape. However, in effect this
does not always happen. In terms of new legislation to come before South
Africa's parliament in early 2003, rape survivors will be entitled to
immediate PEP after rape - AT THEIR REQUEST. Ensure you request these
drugs to prevent HIV. Side effects are minimal and even rare in rape
survivors. Ensure you take the proper dosage every day for the full 28
days, if you are forgetful, which most rape survivors are as a result of
post traumatic stress then get a friend or family member to help ensure
you take your meds. * Do not take the drugs and then stop them while on the 28 day course - if the virus is in your body it will race through your system. * When you finish the 28 day treatment and are waiting the two weeks before your first HIV test (at 6 weeks) go onto a natural immune booster like MODUCARE, and ideally remain on it for the year until your final test.
