DATA ON RAPE
28 September 2000

From: MOEGAMAD GANIEF

I am doing an project in Forecasting on the patterns of Rape reported in South Africa. I have managed to obtain monthly data of reported rape cases since 1994. However, this data set is to small for the analysis I need to perform. I would appreciate if you could provide me with more data (say from 1990). If you do not have these data, could you please provide me with detail on where I can find such data.

Thank you kindly!

NIKE'S OFFENSIVE OLYMPICS COMMERCIAL
23 September 2000

During the Olympics opening ceremony television viewers saw a Nike ad of a woman being attacked and chased through her home by a man wielding a chain saw - it has seen international viewer outrage.

The following is it's response to one letter, followed by a letter from Charlene Smith, we encourage you to write to Nike and express your concern too, their email address is: swoosh@custhelp.com

Nike's response:

Thank you for sharing with Nike your views on the new "Why Sport?" television ad titled "Horror."

It has generated a very large and spirited viewer response, with consumers weighing in both positively and negatively. The intent of this ad was certainly not to offend or make light of violence, and if you have been offended by the ad, we sincerely apologize.

Our goal was to clearly parody classic cinematic moments, in this particular case the extremely popular "horror" movies, to show how the benefits of being physically fit can appear unexpectedly in unusual situations. In the case of Suzy Hamilton, the US Olympian who appears in "Horror," she is the victor, not the victim. Many of our consumers have let us know they understand the ad and enjoyed it. Many others have let us know that they do not care for it at all.

The NBC networks have elected to discontinue airing this ad during the Olympic broadcasts.

Sincerely,
Nike USA Consumer Affairs

OLYMPICS HORROR ADVERT
23 September 2000

TO NIKE:
As a South African rape survivor I need to tell you how disgusted I was by your ad for the Olympics - what possessed Nike to use an ad that made light of the absolute terror women who are attacked experienced?

Violence against women is rising all around the world. I expect Nike to make a sizeable contribution to anti-violence efforts to show that it had no bad intent against women - and on this year's day of no-violence against women. I expect Nike to call on men, young men in particular not to run away from issues of sexual violence but to take a stand against sexual violence.

Your conduct has been outrageous and I hope the ad has been pulled in perpetuity. If it is screened in South Africa I can tell you it will be my pleasure to personally lead a boycott of Nike products.

Charlene Smith

SITE PROMPTS INVOLVEMENT
18/09/2000

Hello:
Last night I saw an episode of SexTV here in Toronto which focused on your organization and the subject of rape in general in South Africa.

Being pretty uninformed at the start, I was shocked by the statistics and personal stories presented. Today I am moved to email you and tell you how impressed I am at the work your organization has undertaken and to let you know that I intend to look at this issue here at home and somehow involve myself .

Really, I guess, this is to let you know that your work and dedication IS having an effect and on a global scale.

Best of luck in your continued efforts.

THANKS FOR SITE
23/08/2000

To all the remarkable people who created this site,
I was reading my daily fix of the Mail and Guardian, when I stumbled on your link they have posted on their site. I have just spent the whole morning reading "speakout" from start to finish, and may I say how moved, touched, proud and positive it has made me feel. Proud that there are such brave and talented people in our country who are making the difference to other's lives, positive that women (and some men) are taking a stand against this dreadful crime that threatens all of us.

To all those who have survived rape and told their stories here, I don't know you, but I feel priviledged that you have let me share your ordeals. You have taught me so much, in one morning. You are brave almost beyond my imagining. Well done to everybody involved, may this web resource go from strength to strength. My wish is that we may one day be in the position where web sites such as these become completely unneccesary.

Love, Jan Weintrob

THANKS FOR SITE
20/08/2000

Thank you for this site.
We need sites, adverts, discussions and TV programmes to let women know they are not alone when they are raped or abused. We need them to show society that we will not accept this violence.

My sister was killed by her husband. My mother-in-law wants us to forgive him and is trying to get her deceased daughter's children to see their abusive father. Denial runs very very deep and prevents her from having to deal with the part we all played in keeping quiet when we knew there was a problem. It saves her from the most traumatic part of all, the acknowledgement that the way she raised her child included teaching her that there are some (male) behaviours that should not be spoken about but quietly accepted.

Pray for us.
Thank you "Maureen"

CHEMICAL CASTRATION
19.07.2000

Ek is 'n finale jaar LLB student, en doen my skripsie oor Chemies kastrasie.

THE UNITED NATIONS LOOKS AT SEXUAL ABUSE, HIV AND EDUCATION - AND ASKS FOR HELP
17/07/2000

From: Carol Coombe, Pretoria, South Africa

I am preparing a report on HIV/AIDS and the education sector in South Africa for the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. I have worked for more than 30 years in education management and planning in Southern Africa, and ever since the start of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Zambia 20 years ago, have been increasingly concerned about the long-term impact of HIV/AIDS on our schools, communities, children and teachers, particularly female staff.

We have gathered important (and for some of us, much new) information - during work on girls' education in Zambia for UNICEF for example - about levels of (1) homosexuality/bisexuality, NOT just among younger age cadres of boys, prisoners, soldiers, single-hostel miners etc (2) incest which, given the traditional place of women and girls in the family, continues to prevail, particularly but not only, in rural areas, and (3) child abuse which seems to be on the increase with the pandemic.

The central issues for me are the implications these practices have for addressing the impact of HIV/AIDS on education systems. We think that (1) and (2) are customarily long-standing, but little understood among the research community, although Isaac Schapera implied it 30 years ago in his work on traditional cultures in the region. We think that (3) might be coming into focus partly because of better reporting by welfare services (in South Africa, for example), or more probably because it is on the increase as men think that either they can avoid AIDS by having sex with a child, or they can be cured if they are already infected (one way, and fathers in another), and the issue of responsibility of each individual for choosing how to behave.

What about networking with those who are concerned with violence against women and children, particularly in the day of AIDS when sexual abuse or sexual harassment may in effect literally constitute murder?

If you would like to read an abridged version of Carol's report click here.

SPEAKOUT AGREES WITH CAROL COOMBES AND IS BEGINNING A READERS SPEAKOUT SECTION - WHICH IF WE CAN ACCESS FUNDS WILL DEVELOP INTO A CHAT SECTION FOR DISCUSSING ISSUES AROUND SEXUAL VIOLENCE AND HIV/AIDS. THE PURPOSE OF SPEAKOUT HAS ALWAYS BEEN NOT ONLY TO INFORM OURSELVES AND OTHERS OF THESE CRITICAL ISSUES, BUT TO ADD TO THE DEBATE TO HARNESS NEW THINKING AND RESEARCH SO THAT WE CAN STOP SSEXUAL VIOLENCE AND HIV/AIDS. OUR GOAL IS NOT REDUCTION - BUT ENDING SEXUAL VIOLENCE AND AIDS. PLEASE LET US HAVE YOUR COMMENTS AND RESEARCH AT speakout@global.co.za
