Answers for a school essay, 22 March 2006
Hi, I'm Janna and I'm in eighth grade.
In school we have to write a essay about a world issue, and I picked
rape and how it should be in school curriculu, beacuse i know i wouldn't
know what to do if it happened to me. And if you don't mind i would like
to get a better point of view from a victims side, and some more
information. so if you would please answer these question's.
some question's: First name (if want
to):
Charlene Smith
How long did it take for you to report
being assaulted?
As soon as I was rescued by my neighbours - same night
Did you wonder why the attacker picked
you?
No
What is your age?( if want to, but it
will help)
40
Did you regret going to court or not?
why or why not?
No, because he is now in jail
Do you personally feel like there
should be more awareness in schools?
Absolutely, there is too little awareness in schools and most of that
told to schools is rubbish like you should do self defence so you can
fight an attacker, in South Africa 85% of attackers have weapons (guns
or knives) and 65% of us get raped at home. For children most of them
will be raped by a father, uncle, brother or grandfather and NOT a
stranger.
And too few young people realise that rape can result either in a
sexually transmitted disease such as HIV, venereal disease, gonorrhea,
syphillis, chlamydia or Heptatis B, few realse that it can result in
pregnancy too. The US Department of Justice in its first ever sexual
assault protocol in 2005 failed to include emergency contraception.[8]
The risk of pregnancy after rape is less than 5 percent according to
research by Stanford University - but the vulnerable group is large. Of
333 000 rapes reported in the USA in 1998, 25 000 resulted in
pregnancies - of which 22 000 could have been prevented.[9]
Do you think what had happened to you
could have been avoid?
No, it's very important that you understand that the rape survivor is
not to blame but only the perpetrator, I am going to attach an article I
wrote last week that gives you some idea of the madness, if you use it
you must be sure to source it to me because I retain copyright. Also it
is ignorant to call us victims, we are only victims if we are dead, we
are called rape survivors.
If you new some awareness?
Lots.
