Student query - 22nd March 2006

I am a journalist student and was asked to do a assignment on rape. I was wondering if you could maybe tell me about the publication of names of rape victims. Is it allowed? What is the effect on the victims?

I would really appreciate your help and the authority to use your reply in my assignment

Yours sincerely
Mia

You can use anything we say with pleasure as long as you source it, including material on the site. First of all you don't call us "victims" unless we are dead - victim is a derogatory term, consult the dictionary. We are rape survivors.
You can usethe name of a rape survivor only if he or she is over the age of 18 and ONLY if he or she gives his or her consent. If it is a child raped you may not use the name of family members, as ane xample, if it can identify him/her.
