4,7 MILLION SOUTH AFRICANS INFECTED WITH HIV: SURVEY
About 4,7 million South Africans -- one in every nine -- were infected with HIV by the end of last year, a new government study indicates. More than 400 clinics throughout the country participated in the study.
It revealed that about 24,5 percent of woman attending public antenatal clinics were infected with HIV by the end of last year. This figure stood at 22,4 percent in 1999, and at 22,8 in 1998.
The latest results are contained in a report that was released by Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang. The survey is considered to be one of the main methods of HIV surveillance in the country.
