WASHINGTON--The violent crime rate in the United States declined by 15 per cent last year.
It was the largest annual drop since the U.S. Justice Department started tracking the figures in 1974.
The department says there were about 7.4 million violent crimes in the U.S. in 2000. That was down by about one million from 1999.
Property crimes, which account for about 75 per cent of all offences, fell by 10 per cent.
