THE AIDS CONSORTIUM: BASIC FACTS, July 2005
The AIDS Consortium in Johannesburg,
South Africa was established as a project at the Centre for Applied
Legal Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1992. Its aim
was to enhance the human rights and dignity of those with HIV/AIDS.
In 1998, the AIDS Consortium established itself as an independent
non-government organization (NGO); and at its first annual general
meeting in 1999, the constitution was ratified by 225 members.
In July 2000 the AIDS Consortium registered as a Section 21 Company NPO.
The founding document was the HIV/AIDS charter which set out the basic
rights of people living with HIV/AIDS.
The AIDS Consortium represents over 1 000 affiliates which are mostly
community based organizations (CBOs). It is one of the most powerful
networking organisations in the field of HIV/AIDS in South Africa. It
sees its role as primarily supportive to community based organisations
and although it is not a campaign office, it regularly plays a key
advocacy role by supporting partner organizations advovacy campaigns and
is a key source for identifying advocacy issues from the community.
In 2005, 52% of its R7,28m budget is from foreign embassies and aid
organisations, 14% comes from government or state-allied organisations
and a mere one percent comes from a single South African company. The
remainder of the budget is still being raised, with a focus on
generating more funding from the private sector, independent revenue
generation and other government departments in South Africa.
